Job Qualifications
- Sleep Trainee: High school diploma or GED. Must apply for a California polysomnography trainee license within 3 months. BLS required within 90 days. Registry/certification required within 6 months of eligibility.
- Sleep Technician: High school diploma or GED. 6 months of relevant experience. Completion of AASM A-Step or BRPT-approved education. BLS required. CPSGT or RPSGT preferred.
- Sleep Technologist: RPSGT or CPSGT, California state license, BLS, 5+ years clinical sleep experience. Knowledge of AASM standards and sleep disorder pathophysiology.
- Sleep Scoring Technologist: RPSGT/CPSGT, California license, 5+ years experience, and ability to accurately score PSG/HSAT studies using AASM rules.
- Assistant/Lead/Chief Technologists: Higher leadership responsibilities, California license, BLS, and proficiency in sleep-specific troubleshooting, communication, and management.
Skills Required
- Independent, efficient work ethic with sound judgment
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in EMR systems and sleep testing software
- Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and anticipate complications
- Leadership skills for lead and chief roles
Primary Responsibilities
- Collect and analyze patient info and determine testing parameters
- Prepare and calibrate sleep study equipment
- Perform and monitor PSG, MSLT, MWT, CPAP/BiPAP titrations, and more
- Document patient observations and ensure data integrity
- Implement therapeutic interventions and patient education
Service Management & Professionalism
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, AASM, BRPT standards
- Clean and maintain equipment; manage lab supplies
- Complete required CEUs monthly; log ISR documentation
- Communicate effectively with patients and team members
- Follow Sleep Physician orders and complete assigned tasks
Work Schedule
- Night shifts are 11.5 hours, 3 nights per week (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM approx.)
- Techs must remain on site and monitor patients continuously, including breaks
- Meal periods are counted as hours worked
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, keyboarding, reaching, and lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Assisting patients in/out of bed; ergonomic care is emphasized
- Visual acuity for interpreting test data and monitoring patients
